Stone quarry in Italy

Piasentina architectural limestone

The Iaconcig family have dedicated all their passion and their commitment to the Piasentina limestone for four generations, continuing with pride the long Friulan (from Friuli region) tradition of quarrymen and stonemasons. The journey of their Piasentina Stone starts in their quarries and workshops situated in the wonderful natural scenery of the Natisone Valleys, and continues all the way to reach the world, where the stone can finally express its unique values and generate emotions for its beauty. Its technical qualities make it the material of choice for all types of high-end interior design and modern architectural projects.

Natural stone finishes and textures

Modern light grey color and the versatility of Piasentina limestone provides endless visual and aesthetic variations within one single material. Using different types of surface finishing, state–of–the art technologies such as laser printing, the skill of our stonemasons allows us to offer custom–made solutions. The following pages show 30 types of finishes provided by Iaconcig on different types of surfaces. The Natural Skin finish is the hard, outer surface of the stone block. Its coloring is affected by the surrounding terrain and can take hues ranging from ochre to yellow. Piasentina Stone provides both tactile and visual experiences. Each finish has its own personality. Each Stone is a unique piece of nature.

Handcrafted stone from Italy

Each stone is different. However, having uniform material allows you to produce larger works. Only few quarries can ensure that the material they extract has uniform and even appearance. The stone starts living only when transformed by wise craftsmanship. From its extraction until the final installation in place, it is essential that the Piasentina Stone is worked and handcrafted by the most qualified people.

A modern, natural, light grey limestone

: beauty, strength, durability, workability. The Piasentina Stone stands out among the other stones for its qualities and unique color. One of the characteristic features of this stone is its low water absorption, making it ideal for urban paving and architectural covers. It allows you to create different finishes and surface textures using ancient traditional techniques and tools, adding unique value to each and every project where it is used. Depending on how it is worked, the Piasentina Stone responds with different tactile and chromatic effects, creating endless combinations from one single material. Different thicknesses are also available, for all kinds of uses. The Piasentina Stone is a material without equal, whose geographic origins and geological and technical attributes are guaranteed internationally with the CE mark by Iaconcig.

Italian design and marbles

: after quarrying, the Piasentina limestone blocks are graded again and sorted according to their intended use, before being roughly squared. This preliminary step allows us to both prepare the raw material for later operations, but it also allows us to detect possible imperfections. Even if today the process is largely mechanized, the human element is essential when working Piasentina limestone. It is the skill of our craftspeople that allows us to select the right thickness, the correct grain, and remove, slowly and surely, any defect from the stone, until we arrive to a material of absolute excellence. We offer both semi–finished products for the construction industry, as well as fully–finished products with a wide range of surface finishes, including brushed, flamed, polished, rough–sawn, or inspired by the ancient art of local stonemasons, or with material or geometrical textures.

History of Piasentina stone

: the geological origins of the Piasentina limestone and its millennial history as a building material are deeply connected to a unique geographical area in Europe: the Julian Prealps area, on the border between Italy and Slovenia. Here, towards the late Jurassic period (about 145 million years ago) the Northern Adriatic seabed rose, creating a very special geological area. With its unmistakable light grey color, sometimes verging towards brown or reddish, or maybe just tinged with white, the Piasentina limestone emerges and outcrops along the slopes of the Natisone Valleys, through forests, meadows and vineyards. The quarries were first used by the Romans for the construction of the nearby Cividale, the ancient Forum Iulii founded by Julius Caesar in the 1st century BC. They were then used during the time of the Lombards in the 9th century and throughout the ages for countless purposes: from churches to palaces and villas, from farmhouses to road pavings. Unknown craftsmen and the most famous names in the history of architecture have used it, including the Renaissance genius Andrea Palladio and the Art Nouveau architect Raimondo D’Aronco, all the way to the architectural and design projects of the 21st century.
